Common Procedures Performed
Common procedures performed by sleep medicine specialists are preparation for and interpretation of sleep studies, which may be performed at your home or at a specialized sleep center.
A sleep study is usually performed at night and usually at a specialized sleep center and involves:
- Electroencephalogram or EEG - to measure brain wave activity
- Electrocardiogram or ECG - to measure heart activity
- Electro-oculogram or EOG - to measure eye movements
- Monitoring airflow through your mouth and nose
- Monitoring muscle movements of the chest and extremities
- Measuring oxygen levels while sleeping
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, CPAP
If it is determined that you have sleep apnea, one of the many disorders that can be identified during a sleep study, Dr. Huang may recommend the home use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). CPAP is a small machine that forces air into your lugs to keep your airway open at night.
